Restaurant: The Blowfish

I went to The Blowfish on a Saturday evening. We were greeted by a pleasant hostess who showed us to our table. The Blowfish is beautifully decorated with breath-taking views of the sea, the City of Cape Town and Table Mountain.

The Blowfish has a new concept of serving the main course. You can come up to the fish counter and choose the fish cuts that you want. Or, if this is not your style, you may still order from your seat.

The green SASSI fish are labled in the menu which helps to choose sustainable fish to eat. There are a number of fish on the menu that are not labled green though, so please refrain from eating those fish.

For more information on SASSI, please see:

Service:
Sporadically good and then bad in that they try hard to give good service but small things are lacking.

Some of the bad service includes:
  • The dirty napkins were refloded in a different way after we got up to choose our fish. Why not give us new napkins instead? Mine was quite dirty after the prawn starter as I did not receive a finger bowl.
  • There was a bit of polystyrene in my drinking glass (with ice) - hopefully they did not just unpack a new glass without washing it adequately. My red Grapetizer was served warm.
  • They do not offer 100% fruit juices.
  • One of my fellow diners mentioned that the chips were inconsistently cooked - i.e. some were a bit hard (under done) while others were crispy. Another diner mentioned that, on a previous occasion, her chips were raw inside.
  • I asked for a greek salad with my meal and received a salad without any feta or olives.
  • I was given a very dirty spoon for the sorbet course.
  • The waitron stretched over two people and a candle to get a glass when he could simply have walked around the table.
Good service:
  • Friendly hostess
  • Knowledgeable waitron
  • Excellent food presentation
Menu issues:
The menu pages are in a folder. I think that for this callabre of restaurant, they should have a more formal menu.

Food:
The starters were beautifully presented and delicious.
I had the Angelfish and Blue Nose. They were succulent and tasty. The Blue Nose was slightly more delightful than the Angelfish. Unfortunately, there was no room for any of us to have dessert.

Drinks:
A fellow diner claims that the semi-sweet white house wine was reasonably good. The rest of us had soft drinks so no comment necessary there.

Prices:
A bit on the expensive side, but worth it for the quality of the food.

Dress Code:
Smart casual. Some of the ladies were wearing smart cocktail dresses on this occasion.

Comment:
I feel that this restaurant has great potential but they need to sort out a few minor issues to get a better rating on this site. I will try to review them again to see if there is any progress.

P.S. I hear that there is an 'all you can eat' sushi special on Sundays! You pay R149 from 5pm onwards! Booking is apparently always essential.

Website: I can has Cheezburger

www.icanhascheezburger.com is one of my favourite websites. I use it for my daily dose of comedy. If you are a cat fan, you really should check it out (there are also other tabs such as Fail if you are more into that).

I CAN HAS CHEEZBURGER?
see more Lolcats and funny pictures

For your first visit, I would suggest looking at the earliest posts first (click on Last on the breadcrumbs on the bottom). If you need to get back to a previous page then type the page number in the web address i.e. www.icanhascheezburger.com/page/439. Be aware that the page numbers change as more posts are added!

There is a kind of LOLCat language (don't freak out - it is not like Elvish or Pig Latin) that you need to get into. It is really easy - you just have to get over the fact that everything is spelled out as it sounds and that not everyone uses the same mis-spelled words. If you can understand what happened with the bucket, then you are half way there :-)

Movie: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was thoroughly enjoyable. It is all about a very unusual person who is born old and gradually gets younger. This 'young man' grows up in an old age home and has interesting experiences with the patrons. Love proves a difficult feat as, inevitably, he will continue to grow younger while she ages.

This movie might sound strange but it is worth seeing because of the beautiful cinematography and the charmingly unusual little stories and characters that sprout out all over the movie. It is a delight for the eyes and will even leave you chuckling with vigour!

Acting:
Brad Pitt was convincing but mild. With the unusual storyline, I think that this enhanced the story as he needed to play down a character that is so intrinsically strange already.

Cate Blanchett is a jewel. An excellent portrayal of many different ages. Convincing, striking and totally believable. A woman of many talents. Beautifully polished even when she is meant to be rough.

Director:
David Fincher

Special Effects:
Amazing. Make-up and special effects made a huge impact in Benjamin Button.

Oscar Winner:
Benjamin Button won 3 Oscars namely for Best Achievement in Make-Up, Visual Effects and Art Direction.

Spoiler Alert!
I am being really bad here but it does not matter in which way men actually age - most men still think that they can make life-changing decisions without taking their partner's opinion into account. You should never leave the ones you love! The whole pretence of him sparing them from taking care of him was bull! She ended-up caring for him until his last breath. The bottom line is that she loved him when he was old (and he rejected her) and he was not there for her when she was old! Was this meant to highlight that so many men can be immature after the mid life crisis and tend to grow younger in their maturity level? Interesting thought! Maybe he just looked like what all men are in the inside?

Anyways, enough grumbling about men. There are many perfectly good ones out there too. The bottom line is that ,if you see this movie lightheartedly, it is a lovely treat.

P.S. I love the guy who was struck by lightning 7 times and the artist :-D

Restaurant: JB Rivers

JB Rivers in Claremont, 21 March 2008 - FREEDOM DAY!

Food:
  • Nachos - not too greasy. Fresh salsa and guacamole. Very Cheesy!
  • Calamari - my dinner date enjoyed it and I restrained myself from stealing some so will have to r8 it personally some other time. It looked delicious and there was a lot of salad that came with it.

Drinks:
  • Prohibition (non-alcoholic) - delicious blend of fruits and ice - highly recommended.
  • Cappuccino - good cappuccino with loads of foam but comes in a fairly small mug. Biscotti included!
Service:
  • Quick, friendly and knowledgeable.

  • Reasonable for what you get. Can easily pay under R100 for dinner and a drink or two.

Let me add that JB also has a sushi bar! Please see future posts for comments.
